As the name suggests the Ahimsa Silk refers to all silk that is obtained using a non violent method of extraction.
Usually, silk is extracted before the worm leaves its cocoon. These cocoons are collected and boiled with the larvae still inside it. With this method, it means that over 1500 silk worms end up dying to make a metre of silk.
But for making Ahimsa silk, the extraction takes place when the worms have left the cocoon after it metamorphoses into a moth. But only 16% of the silk is obtained when usingthis method. Due to this Ahimsa silk is more expensive than other silk goods.
